About the Artist

Meet Kym Day

I'm a realist oil painter from Dallas, Texas, but raised in Georgia and the Carolinas. I currently work in my home studio in Greenville, SC.

I paint from a place of longing to return to my Texan roots amidst the disorienting influence of popular culture. The result of this clashing imagery is often dreamy and humorous, and I find utter joy in merging beauty with absurdity.

My painting techniques and use of realism reflect my interest in art historical symbolism. Pulling from caricatures and symbols of the American West, the figures in my work are innocently misled by nonsensical diversions and meaningless pursuits, symbolized by junk foods and other motifs of cultural consumption. The characters are ignorantly lost in delusion and daydream.

Background

I am the sixth-generation in my family born in Dallas, Texas, but grew up in Georgia and the Carolinas as my family made several moves over state lines. I attended The SC Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities in Greenville, SC, before receiving a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD. I spent a year at my studio at the Ward (now closed) in downtown Greenville before returning to school for my MFA from Clemson University, where I studied sculpture.

Recently, I've had the pleasure of completing artist residencies at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, SC, in 2o2o, and at The Bascom Center for Visual Arts in Highlands, NC, in 2018, and teaching at Clemson and Lander Universities. In 2020, I moved my studio practice to MINT Studios & Gallery in Atlanta, GA, before returning to Greenville in 2021, where I now work in my home studio.
