Meet Kym Day
Kym Day is an oil painter specializing in magical realism with a romanticized take on the American West. Originally from McKinney, TX, she now lives and works in Greenville, SC. Her paintings filter a longing for her Texan roots through the lens of lovesick daydream & fantasy.
Kym’s fascination with the horse motif began in childhood, while watching her mother sculpt horses in clay. That early influence continues to shape her work today, which preserves the absurdity, curiosity, and imaginative freedom of childhood.
In these paintings, dreamy horses beckon viewers into luminous dreamscapes. Some traverse star-filled night skies, while others bear constellations across their coats. They are the living myths a proverbial horsegirl might long to stumble upon.
Her sense of escapism and adventure is also deeply influenced by the “strong girl” literary heroines of her childhood, particularly Pippi Longstocking and Nancy Drew. Their tales of mystery, independence, and improbable adventure inform the cowgirl figures who populate her paintings. While some embody an understated confidence through posture and presence, others possess supernatural physical strength, a playful reference to Pippi’s effortless ability to lift her horse above her head.
Throughout her work, Kym finds immense joy in merging beauty with absurdity, transforming childhood fascinations into surreal worlds.
